Indoor Soccer Rules

Captain’s Duties

  • Captain acts as spokesperson during the game.  Only the captain can speak with the official(s).
  • Captain is responsible for the conduct of all their players and spectators.  Officials and the supervisor will ask the captain to remove players or spectators if necessary.  Good sportsmanship is required at all times.
  • Inform team of rules, equipment policies, and game times.
  • Should a team be more than 5 minutes late to a game or not show up, they will be given a forfeit.  More than one forfeit will automatically drop that team from the league. 

Players

  • Game is played with 5 players,  4 on the court and 1 keeper. Two of the players on the court must be females at all times).  The goalie  can be of either sex.
  • Rosters may only have 10 participants on them.
  • A minimum of 4 players is needed to start a game of which 2on the court must be female.  If a team has fewer than 5 players, 5 minutes after the start of the game- it is a forfeit.  Teams may play if they choose, but it is still a forfeit.
  • Only one former college letter winner may be on any one team.

Equipment

  • Each player must bring a pair of clean athletic shoes to wear on the MAC surface.  (A pair that they did not wear into the building). 
  • No baseball caps are to be worn during play. 
  • Goalies are encouraged to use their own equipment (gloves).
  •  No jewelry, chains, rings or earrings will be allowed by participants.

Playing Time

  • Games will consist of two 20 minute halves with a two minute halftime.
  • There are no timeouts in soccer.  Only injury timeouts can be called and must be made by the referee.
  • Substitutions can be made on the fly as in a hockey game.
  • Overtime:  Sudden Death. For playoff purposes, a three minute sudden death overtime will be played and if still tied after one overtime, a second overtime will be played.  If it is still tied, it remains a tie.

Rules of Play

  • Game begins with a kickoff at the center circle, (either forwards or backwards).  The defense must stand outside the circle, no closer than 6 feet.
  • Kickoffs are used to start a half and after each goal is scored.
  • The ball is out of bounds only when it goes out over the dasher boards or above the paint line on the walls
  • When the ball does go out of bounds the ball is put back in play by opposing team player using  a kick in, closest to where the ball went out.  Defense must stand at least 6 feet away.
  • All standard soccer penalties will be enforced: tripping, interference or bodily contact: results in an indirect kick.

Body checking is not allowed.  The penalty for Checking is a Direct Kick.  Intentional Checking will result in a player ejection from the game and possibly the rest of the league.

  •  Any penalties in the goal area shall result in a Penalty Kick.
  • The goalie may not the cross the center line at any time.
  • The goalie may not kick or throw the ball past the center line without the ball first being touched by another player (of either side) or the wall.
  • Off sides: There will be no off sides.
  • When a ball is tight on the boards, players can only have one hand or forearm on the boards.  This is to avoid rough play.
  • No side tackling.
  • Goalie can only kick ball that is on the ground.  No punting allowed.

Player Conduct

  • No swearing will be allowed.  A warning will be given for the first offense.  A second offense will result in an unsportsmanlike penalty which will result in loss of a point and ejection from the game.
  • Fighting will result in immediate expulsion.
  • Taunting your opponent will result in immediate expulsion.
  • Any player ejected must meet with the IM Director before being allowed to play again.
  •  NO TOLERANCE.  No participation by an intoxicated player will be allowed.  PENALTY:  immediate suspension from the league and a referral to the Dean of Students Office for disciplinary action.

Official’s and League Supervisor’s Rights

  • They have the right to eject any player(s) from a game.
  • They have the right to end a game at any point if captains cannot control their players and/or spectators.
  • They have the final say.  Any rule interpretation or dispute must take place between the captain and the official.
